Peppercorn's History

Peppercorn Natural Foods was opened in May of 1976 at 43 Main Street by a group of friends who wanted to have access to bulk natural foods. Yes folks, back then you had to travel to Boston, Dover, Franconia or St. Johnsbury  to buy brown rice, almonds and medjool dates! We thought  “why not have the delivery truck come to us”! We have come a long way from buying wheat by the ton (40-50lb bags that all had to be lugged upstairs! ) and purchasing brewer’s yeast and peanut butter in 60 lb barrels.

In 1997 when we were bursting at the seams in our small space, we purchased our building from the landlord , had some renovations done to the building and were able to add some additional cooler and freezer space. In 2000 we had our picture window removed on the coldest day in January. What were we thinking?! We moved in a cooler that would allow us to add organic produce to the store. (Don’t look up, there’s still a scrape in the ceiling from where we tried to stand up the cooler~ it was a tight fit!)

We (Maggie, Lorrie and Deanna) balance our time at Peppercorn with many other interests including cooking, gardening, skiing, biking, sewing and family. If we aren’t at Peppercorn you can find Maggie making maple syrup or pruning blueberry bushes, Lorrie perusing the thrift stores for finds for costumes or crafts and Deanna out birdwatching or gardening. And no, none of us are related…

We have remained committed to providing natural and organic products for the community. We support local, fair-trade and organic wherever possible. We search for the best ingredients at the best price.
